Donovaly, Slovakia, is a small mountain village and ski resort in the centre of the country, 35 to 40 minutes by car north of Banská Bystrica. It lies in a saddle at around 960 m, where the Greater Fatra (Veľká Fatra) meets the Starohorské vrchy hills, and the Low Tatras begin about 7 km to the east. Winter belongs to PARK SNOW Donovaly and its roughly 11 km of slopes; in summer the village turns to hiking, a bike park, a summer toboggan run and a fairy-tale village for children.

Where is Donovaly in Slovakia?

Donovaly is a municipality of 281 residents (31 December 2025) in the Banská Bystrica district of central Slovakia. It sits on road I/59 (E77) between Banská Bystrica, about 28 km to the south, and Ružomberok, about 30 km to the north, at the Donovaly saddle (Donovalské sedlo). No motorway runs through the village: you join the D1 motorway at Ružomberok and the R1 expressway at Banská Bystrica.

The hills above the village, Nová hoľa (1,370 m) and Zvolen (1,402.5 m), belong to the Greater Fatra. The Starohorské vrchy rise to the south and south-east, and beyond the Hiadeľské sedlo pass (1,099 m) to the east the Low Tatras begin, with Prašivá (1,651.8 m) and Veľká Chochuľa (1,753.2 m) as the first big summits. Donovaly lies between two national parks, the Low Tatras (NAPANT) and Veľká Fatra; under Government Regulation No. 189/2026 Coll., in force since 15 July 2026, part of the municipality's cadastral area falls within NAPANT and its protection zone.

The municipality is spread across several hamlets and tourist localities, such as Polianka, Mistríky, Vrchbáň and Pod Magurou. The name is pronounced DO-no-va-lee, with short vowels (the o as in "hot") and the stress on the first syllable, as in every Slovak word.

  • Airports: Bratislava and Vienna are the usual gateways from the west, Budapest from the south, and Kraków or Katowice from Poland. Poprad-Tatry is closer. Sliač, the nearest, mainly handles seasonal charter flights, and restoring regular routes was still under discussion in 2026, so check what is flying before you plan around it.
  • Motorways: Slovak motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette, sold at eznamka.sk.
  • Train and bus: there is no railway in Donovaly. Trains run to Banská Bystrica and Ružomberok, and regional buses between the two towns stop in the village; the municipality publishes the current timetable.

Skiing at PARK SNOW Donovaly

PARK SNOW Donovaly has two ski areas:

  • Nová hoľa: the main hill for intermediate and stronger skiers, served by the Telemix, a combined chairlift and gondola that rises to about 1,360 m.
  • Záhradište: the area for beginners and families, with the Buly Expres four-seat chairlift and night skiing on more than 2 km of lit slopes until 20:00 (PARK SNOW).

Together they offer about 11 km of slopes between 914 and 1,361 m: 5 km easy, 5.9 km intermediate and just 0.1 km difficult. The longest run is 2.2 km with a 447 m drop, and snowmaking from 30 snow cannons covers 80% of the slopes (skiresort.com). The resort runs a ski and snowboard school with rental and service, and in the winter season the private Medical Center Donovaly, a trauma clinic with X-ray, is open daily from 9:00 to 19:00. Strong skiers will find little steep terrain; Jasná in the Low Tatras, with 52.1 km of slopes, is about 1 h 10 to 1 h 20 away by road.

The season typically runs from late November into March: the lifts opened on 29 November in 2025, and the 2026/27 price list applies from 15 November 2026. Snow is the honest caveat. Modelled ERA5-Land data for the village's grid point, not a weather station, average 87 days a season with at least 10 cm of snow from 2015/16 to 2025/26, but the range runs from 39 to 129 days, and the last two winters brought 44 and 70.

Cross-country skiing, dog sleds and other winter activities

  • Cross-country: about 18 km of regularly groomed trails, from the Polianka and Močiare loops to longer routes towards Šachtičky and Špania Dolina (holidayinfo.sk; PARK SNOW).
  • Dog sleds: rides are offered through PARK SNOW until about 20 March, snow permitting. Donovaly has hosted international sled-dog races since the 1990s, traditionally in February; check the date for the coming season.
  • More: skating, ski touring and tandem paragliding with local pilots, which also runs outside winter.

It has one price for all ages: €495 at the till, or €345 in the online sale running in early October 2026, a price that rises with each sales wave. Each holder can bring up to two children under 13 free on the slopes and at SPA & Aquapark Turčianske Teplice, and gets free parking, 20% off at five PARK SNOW restaurants and bars and five half-price day tickets for friends (PARK SNOW).

What to do in Donovaly in summer

  • Habakuky: a fairy-tale village built around the Slovak folk tales collected by Pavol Dobšinský. In 2026 the main season ran from 1 July to 30 August, with school groups from mid-May and weekend tours outside the season; entry was €15 from the age of three, and it is closed in winter (Habakuky).
  • Fun Aréna: a 900 m summer toboggan run with a 72 m drop, plus a children's park and trampolines. The 2026 season runs from 2 April to 1 November, daily from June to August and at weekends otherwise; a single ride costs €6 (Fun Aréna).
  • Riders Park Donovaly: PARK SNOW's bike park. In summer 2026 an adult day ticket cost €26 online from Monday to Thursday and €32 from Friday to Sunday (€29 and €35 at the till), and walkers could ride the lift one way for €15 online (summer price list).
  • Hiking: Nová hoľa and Zvolen, the Greater Fatra summits above the village, are the classic outings, and the Low Tatras ridge starts east of Hiadeľské sedlo. As of early October 2026, the Telemix runs at weekends from 8:00 to 17:00.
  • Paragliding: tandem flights from the slopes of Nová hoľa run through the year.

Donovaly with children and on rainy days

The resort's layout suits families:

  • Záhradište has the four-seat chairlift, gentle slopes, the Funpark Patty Ski children's area with moving carpets, and the ski school.
  • Donovalkovo, a children's park in the same area, is listed on OpenStreetMap as open daily from 10:00 to 18:00; check the current season's hours.
  • In summer, Habakuky and the Fun Aréna children's park and trampolines fill a day easily.
  • With each 2026/27 season pass, up to two children under 13 ski free.

When the weather turns, thermal parks and spas are the usual escapes. Approximate driving times from Donovaly:

  • Bešeňová thermal park: about 45 minutes
  • Kúpele Sliač spa: about 45 minutes
  • SPA & Aquapark Turčianske Teplice, the season-pass partner: about 50 minutes
  • Kúpele Brusno spa: about 50 minutes
  • Tatralandia water park: about 1 hour
  • Banská Bystrica, the regional capital, for shopping, restaurants and its historic centre: 35 to 40 minutes

Shops, healthcare and schools

  • In the village: a minimarket in the centre, souvenir and cheese shops, sports shops and ski rental, a post office with limited hours, an ATM and a tourist information centre, plus restaurants and bars such as Koliba Goral and the Donovalský pivovar brewery.
  • Weekly shopping: COOP Jednota and CBA in Liptovská Osada (about 15 minutes), or the Europa Shopping Center in Banská Bystrica and Kaufland in Ružomberok (each about half an hour).
  • Health: OpenStreetMap shows no pharmacy in the village, so plan on Banská Bystrica. The nearest hospitals are the F. D. Roosevelt University Hospital in Banská Bystrica and the Central Military Hospital (ÚVN SNP) in Ružomberok, each about 35 minutes away. The emergency number is 112.
  • Schools: no school is mapped in the village. Banská Bystrica has Matej Bel University, several grammar schools and a Slovak–English bilingual programme at a private grammar school, but no international or IB school was found there; the nearest IB World Schools are in Bratislava, such as the English International School of Bratislava.

Owning a home in Donovaly through the year

Donovaly lives in two seasons with quiet spells between them. Overnight stays in accommodation establishments in 2025 show the rhythm (Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic):

MonthOvernight stays 2025What is on

March6,183Main season to early March, then spring skiing while snow lasts

October7,554Telemix at weekends (in 2026)
November6,009Lifts usually open in late November

For an owner, that means a house used in winter and summer, with quiet weeks in April and November. A few practical points:

  • Winter: plan snow clearing and heating, drive with winter tyres, and book any help early for Christmas and February.
  • Renting it out: Donovaly charges an accommodation tax of €2 per person per night (since 1 January 2025), foreign guests must be reported to the police within five days of check-in, and from 1 January 2027 short-term rentals offered on online platforms need a number from the short-term rental register (called eTurista in Slovak media; Act No. 133/2026 Coll.). See short-term rental rules in Slovakia.
  • Taxes and bills: the property tax return is due by 31 January of the year after you buy; the cost of owning a ski chalet in Slovakia covers the rest.

Each of NOVALY's six chalets in Donovaly has four bedrooms and three bathrooms, with a sauna and a ski room on the lower ground floor facing a terrace. Floor plans and current availability are on the chalets page, and the gallery shows the visualisations.
